Students take to the catwalk to unveil new Voyager School uniform

The 'top secret' school uniform for the new £26 million Voyager School will be showcased on the catwalk by Year 8 students from Bretton Woods and Walton community schools.

The fashion shows in the Reception Room at Peterborough Town Hall in Bridge Street on Monday 26 and Tuesday 27 June, will be the first public showing of the uniform which will be worn by students at the city's newest school when it opens in September 2007.

Governors have worked with the new Voyager School Council, which is made up of representatives from Bretton Woods and Walton Community Schools, to design the uniform and decide upon its supplier.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire presenter Jane Smith will be the Master of Ceremonies for the Monday event and The Mayor and Mayoress of Peterborough, Councillor Michael Burton and Mrs Beryl Burton are among the invited guests.

Headteacher Hugh Howe said: "The fashion show is a great opportunity for students from both schools to work together on what will be a key part of their identity in the future. I do not want to give anything away but the new uniform is in keeping with our approach to the establishment of the school and is characterized by flair, panache and innovation and we look forward to receiving feedback from parents at the events."

"It should also be a really fun and exciting evening for everyone who attends because it will illustrate the real partnership working that has gone into the whole Voyager project.

"In an unusual twist construction workers will also take to the catwalk to show us the latest fashion in high visibility safety construction wear that is used on building sites today.

It will also provide an opportunity for young people to express themselves through fashion styles such as Goths and Chavs and because of the World Cup, footballers on the catwalk too."

Councillor Geoff Ridgway, Cabinet member for Education and Children's Services, said: "The new Voyager Uniform fashion show is a wonderful example of how, young people are involved in decisions that affect them, schools are involved in the community and how it is possible to make education and learning fun for all involved."
