Peterborough Councillors' tour to the PFI schools brings positive feedback

The ongoing works and programme of the PFI schools project managed by Bouygues UK were viewed during a recent site visit, involving the following members of Peterborough City Council: Councillor Geoff Ridgeway, Cabinet member for Education and Childrens’s Services, Chief executive Gillian Beasley and director of Children’s Services Mohammed Mehmet.

Bouygues UK showcased their works at the three schools. Both Ken Stimpson and Jack Hunt were able to guide their visitors into newly refurbished areas and extensions to existing buildings. The new buildings are taking shape with 70% and 80% of concrete structures already poured.

Construction is also well under way at The Voyager site with concrete nearing 90% completion, with windows being installed and Mechanical & Electrical works in progress. The building works are well on schedule for the opening in September 2007.

Councillor Geoff Ridgway commented: “All three of the school sites which Bouygues are working on are going ahead according to plan. We are extremely pleased with what we saw and that the progress being made at all three schools. All of the sites were very neat and orderly and it was a pleasure to make the visit. They will provide excellent facilities for all the students who will start at these schools next September.”

Director of children’s services Mohammed Mehmet said: “I was very impressed by what I saw at the three sites which will provide state-of-the-art facilities for our young children and young people to learn and develop in the future. The ongoing work at our secondary schools is just one example of how we are building for a better future for everyone in Peterborough. We will all reap benefits of this investment in secondary education in the city.”

The visit ended with a traditional lunch served by the ‘Chef de la Maison’, a successful local catering company hoping to receive this autumn the top accolade that comes with winning one of the Evening Telegraphs’s Business Awards 2006.
